Doors open at our brand new Fontwell store

10th October 2025

On Thursday 21 August, we proudly opened the doors to our brand-new Southern Co-op store on Steeplechase Way in Fontwell. This brand-new location has been designed with the community at its heart, offering a modern, convenient shopping experience alongside the values that make Southern Co-op unique.

The opening marked a significant moment for both colleagues and members. It was the culmination of months of planning and preparation, and it gave us the chance to share something fresh with the Fontwell community. We were thrilled to see local people walk through the doors for the first time and to welcome them into a store built around their needs.

To mark the occasion, we were honoured to be joined by Olympic legend Sally Gunnell OBE, who officially cut the ribbon. Sally was fantastic on the day, bringing real excitement to the opening and making it a moment to remember for colleagues and customers alike.

The ceremony placed a focus on our commitment to supporting local causes. We were delighted to welcome Alice from Chestnut Tree House, who joined us to accept a £500 donation on behalf of the charity. Chestnut Tree House provides hospice care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, as well as vital support for their families across Sussex and South East Hampshire. Alice spoke about the difference that donations like ours make and how community support helps them continue their incredible work.

Alongside Sally and Alice, our store manager shared a few words about the pride felt by the whole team. Opening a new store is no small task, and the colleagues who prepared it worked tirelessly to make sure everything was ready for launch day. Seeing the first customers step inside was a proud moment and a chance for the team to connect directly with the community they will now serve.

The opening was simple, heartfelt, and focused on the people who make Southern Co-op what it is. With words from our special guests, the symbolic ribbon cutting, and the first customers stepping inside, the day captured the spirit of community and set the tone for what this new store will bring to Fontwell.

The opening of our Fontwell store was a celebration of community, a chance to give back, and a proud milestone for colleagues and members alike. With Sally Gunnell OBE helping us cut the ribbon, Alice from Chestnut Tree House highlighting the importance of charity support, and our store manager leading the way, it was a day that set the tone for the exciting future ahead in Fontwell.
