Wonderful wines
As the largest retailer of Fairtrade wine in the world, Co-op has a strong and long-standing commitment to sourcing fairly traded wine and working with vineyards across the globe. Since Co-op Fairtrade wines launched in in 2001, we have invested in projects in South America and South Africa, helping improve standards for working communities now and, hopefully, for years to come. By buying Fairtrade you get delicious wine and help these causes, too. We’ve selected six of our favourite Fairtrade drops to help you decide which you’d like to try first.
Co-op Fairtrade Chardonnay-Viognier, £6.25
Co-op Fairtrade Pinot Grigio, £7
Co-op Fairtrade Chenin Blanc, £5.65
This blend of two white grape varieties is full-bodied and toasty, with floral and passionfruit aromas. It is produced by Bosman Family Vineyards, one of South Africa’s oldest wineries, which works with the Co-op to invest in education and housing projects in the region each year
Refreshingly fruity and dry, with aromas of tropical fruit, this Argentinian wine goes well with veggie and fish dishes. Sales of this wine have helped to pay for a reservoir, which provides clean water for the local people of Tilimuqui, in the Rioja region.
Another award-winning wine produced by the ethically run Bosman Family Vineyards in the Western Cape of South Africa. This white is zesty, with notes of lemon and tropical fruit, and has some nice acidity and freshness to it. Fairtrade money from sales has been used to support local youngsters, helping to fund after-school clubs in the area.
Co-op Fairtrade Bonarda Shiraz, £6.05
Co-op Fairtrade Carmenere, £6.75
Co-op Fairtrade Shiraz, £6.05
Made by the same La Riojana co-operative, in Argentina, as the Co-op Fairtrade Pinot Grigio, this wine is rich, dark and intense and bursting with jammy plum and cherry aromas. Fairtrade funding from the Co-op has helped support initiatives to educate local communities about preserving their environment, including reforestation projects.
The Co-op’s first-ever, award-winning Fairtrade wine is still going strong. Soft, smooth and rich, it has a full berry flavour with hints of mocha. It is produced in Chile and sales have helped fund education for the children of workers in the vineyard, helping them to go to college and university
This South African example of Shiraz is dark and spicy, and makes for easy drinking. It is made at the Bosman Family Vineyards in Wellington, which is co-owned by its workers, and profits from the wine have gone towards building a new medical clinic, preschool and library, which are all housed at the Fairtrade-funded Bovlei Community Centre.
