Apple and orange crumble

Who doesn’t love a crumble? Easy to make, fruity and sweet, with a crunchy golden topping, it’s a winning winter pud. Make your own crumble topping, or for a quick shortcut find readymade crumble mix in store.

*Freezable (freeze before baking, defrost thoroughly then cook as per recipe)

Serves: 6

Ready in: 50 mins

  • 140g plain flour
  • 60g porridge oats
  • 140g chilled butter, cut into small cubes
  • 85g soft brown sugar
  • Custard, to serve

For the filling

  • 5 eating apples (such as Braeburn), cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 oranges, one peeled and cut into segments, one juiced
  • 50g sultanas
  • 100g granulated sugar

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and porridge oats, then rub in the cold butter until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and rub in again to combine.
  2. To make the filling, put the apple and orange slices, sultanas and sugar in a bowl, along with the orange juice. Stir to combine.
  3.  Spread the fruit mixture over a shallow baking dish, then top with the crumble mixture and bake in the oven for 30-40 mins or until a pale golden colour and bubbling. Serve with warm custard, if you like.
