Philly cheese dogs
These Philly cheese dogs are a twist on an American classic, and the perfect easy-eating dinner for a relaxed evening in front of the small screen.
Ingredients
Serves: 6
Ready in: 30 mins
-
-
- 6 Co-op Pork Sausages
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 mixed peppers, sliced
- ½ 200g pack Co-op chestnut mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp white wine, cider or malt vinegar (we used white wine vinegar)
- Pinch sugar
- 6 soft white hot dog rolls or a baguette cut into 6 pieces
- English or American yellow mustard, to serve
- 225g pack Co-op Mozzarella
Method
- Cook the sausages under a moderate grill for 18-20 mins, turning halfway, until cooked through.
- Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan. Fry the onions and peppers with a pinch of salt over a low heat for 10 mins.
- Add the mushrooms, turn the heat up to medium, and fry for another 10 mins until everything is caramelised. Add the vinegar and sugar and cook for 2 mins more, stirring.
- Split the bread rolls in half and spread with a little mustard. Put a sausage in each roll, then top with the onion mixture.
- Tear the mozzarella into small pieces and divide among the hot dogs, dotting it over the top.
- Grill for 2-3 mins until the cheese is just melting and the bread has crisped a little. Serve drizzled with extra mustard, if desired.
